World Book Night.......sharing the love of books

For those who DON'T already know I work as a librarian in a large secondary school in Derbyshire. I have worked in libraries since I was 16 and had a Saturday job in my local library...I loved it, and it set me off on a career path I have thoroughly enjoyed.

I adore books and love to read, sadly I don't get as much time to read as I would like. I'm also a bit of a lazy reader....if I'm not enjoying a book I will move on to something else as life's too short to read a bad book and there's ALWAYS something else waiting to be read. I like to read anywhere and usually have a book in my handbag ready for any unexpected reading opportunities, although, like most people, my favourite reading place is in bed and I often stay up FAR too late reading something I just can't put down!!! I run a staff book club at work and also a community reading group called Lakeside Readers. It's great to spread the love of books with others and talking all things literary for an hour is such a guilty pleasure.

This year I applied to be a 'giver' for World Book Night and was thrilled to find that my application had been successful. In my application I promised to give out the 24 copies of my chosen book (The Road by Cormac McCarthy) from the shortlist of 25 to members of staff at work who were light / non / lapsed readers. It was difficult to choose my book from the shortlist as there were several on there that I'd read and enjoyed but thought that this one would appeal to both men and women, I had recently read it myself and enjoyed it despite the bleak subject matter. I collected my box of books last week from my local library where they had been delivered and created bookmarks for them all with all the information about World Book Night. The recipients need to register their copies on the website using the unique barcodes I have lovingly written inside each one and then simply sit back, read and enjoy!!!

Here are my copies......I was sad to see them go today but pleased to have hopefully started a few people on a reading journey that will last a lifetime.

  1. I've always loved libraries from being really young, and I love reading. Like you, my favourite place to read is in bed. I suffer from insomnia and often read for hours at night if I can't sleep; a really good book doesn't help my sleeping problems as I can't stop reading! I agree with you on the "life's too short to read a bad book" - if I can't get into it after a few attempts I give it up and move on to the next. Kaye :o)
